Summer days are for doing what you love and loving what you do - whether it's riding a bicycle, gardening in the sun or walking to work. Warm summer weather makes everything you do a little more pleasurable. There are people with intellectual disabilities right in your neighbourhood who need a little extra help to do what they love this summer. You can be their ray of sunshine!
21-year-old Jenna has big plans for summer, starting with graduation from Humber College in the Community Integration through Co-operative Education (CICE) Program. With this achievement under her belt, Jenna's ready for a full-time career in the fall - but first it's time to enjoy her last summer as an (almost) carefree student!
For the fourth year in a row, Jenna will work as a Camp Counselor at the Antibes Community Centre in North York where she sets up activities and plays with children under 5. "My job starts in July," explains Jenna. "I can walk to the Community Centre. It takes me about 10 minutes. I would really like to be able to ride my bike there, so that is one of my goals this summer." We're sure Jenna will ace that goal with ease, just as she has already accomplished so much thanks to her parents, the committed professionals at Community Living Toronto and generous donors like you.
As the sun shines on Torontonians doing what we love this summer, think of the other people like Jenna - young and old - with dreams that just need a little extra sunshine to grow and flourish. With a donation of $35, $50 or $100, you can help someone with an intellectual disability learn a new skill. These dreams may seem modest to you and me - to take the bus alone, to paint a picture, to live independently - but to the people supported by Community Living Toronto, they are bright, shining dreams that can change lives - at any age! Community Living Toronto helps over 6,000 individuals of all ages - and their families - by giving them the support they need to live, learn, work and play right in their own communities.
With your generous assistance, a child, youth or adult with an intellectual disability could take advantage of services such as short-term residential care, support at home or school, career and life planning, art classes, recreational programs and much more. It's all about giving them the choices to shape and change their lives.
Just ask Chauncey. Chauncey is 67 and lives at our St. Clair group home. He attends the Gooderham Centre in Scarborough, which provides care and opportunities for adults with severe disabilities. Some days Chauncey chooses to join in activities with the others, some days he likes to help out in the office shredding and helping to deliver the mail, and some days he just wants to listen to his music. Chauncey also volunteers with Meals on Wheels and one of his favourite activities is helping to deliver the free local community newspaper because he gets to go door-to-door and see all his neighbours. The best thing about summer for Chauncey? Swimming, going to the park and the fact that, with no snow, it's so much easier to get around!
Thousands of individuals in Toronto just like Jenna and Chauncey are on a waiting list to receive services from Community Living Toronto.
