ReelAbilities Film Festival Toronto

We’re excited to announce that the ReelAbilities Film Festival is starting on May 24th! We are proud sponsors of this festival and are lucky enough to be co-presenting opening night!

ReelAbilities Film Festival: Toronto (RAFFTO) is Canada’s largest film festival dedicated to showcasing Deaf and disability cultures. The Festival will present 21 films in venues across the city from May 24 – June 2, 2019.

Key Dates: 

  • May 25th-May 26th: Films made bu Citizenship Project participants will screen at Toronto City Hall as part of DoorsOpen Toronto (free!) – Venue is fully accessible
  • May 25th: A night of barrier-free comedy at Streetcar Crowsnest – Venue is fully accessible
  • May 26th: A free dance show with partners PushPULL dance Toronto for a fully relaxed and accessible experience at the Al Green Theatre
  • May 29th: Opening Night at Artscape Launchpad – Come one, come all!

Here are a few of the Films and Short Films included in this years ReelAbilities Film Festival!

From award-winning filmmaker Dan Habib comes Intelligent Lives, a catalyst to transform the label of intellectual disability from a life sentence of isolation into a life of possibility for the most systematically segregated people in America. Three pioneering young adults with intellectual disabilities challenge perceptions of intelligence as they navigate high school, college, and the workforce.
A man with Down syndrome embarks on a solo adventure to discover Tokyo.
A boy who can’t read meets a teacher who changes everything.
Isatou Jallow, a woman from The Gambia living in Seattle, advocates for women, asylees, and people with disabilities. Dimensions of Isatou’s epic journey—from her origins and physical hardships to scholarship, becoming a lawyer and leader, demonstrating an ultimate resiliency and altruism— are deeply human, harrowing, transcendent, tenacious…and part of the American immigrant story.

The night begins with cocktails and Hors d’oeuvres at Artscape Daniels Launchpad at 7:00pm, with honoured guests, artists, filmmakers, and activists in attendance.From award-winning filmmaker Dan Habib comes Intelligent Lives, a catalyst to transform the label of intellectual disability from a life sentence of isolation into a life of possibility for the most systematically segregated people in America. Three pioneering young adults with intellectual disabilities — Micah, Naieer, and Naomie — challenge perceptions of intelligence as they navigate high school, college, and the workforce.

Following the screening we will be joined via video-conference by special guests from the feature film for a Q&A!
